BRICKLAYER

Bricklayer Position

The bricklayer will help deliver high-quality masonry across construction, repair, and conservation projects. This role requires accurate workmanship, sound practical knowledge, and the ability to maintain consistent standards while working safely around colleagues, clients, and other trades.

Key Responsibilities

• Read drawings, specifications, and dimensions before setting out masonry work.
• Lay bricks, blocks, and associated masonry units to the required lines, levels, bonds, and finishes.
• Build and maintain accurate corners, reveals, piers, openings, and other structural features.
• Mix mortar using appropriate materials and proportions for each task.
• Cut and shape masonry neatly around openings, services, and project details.
• Install or accommodate relevant components such as damp-proof courses, cavity trays, wall ties, lintels, and air bricks in accordance with site requirements.
• Finish joints, point brickwork where required, and clean completed work without damaging surrounding surfaces.
• Work carefully on repair and conservation tasks, respecting the character and materials of existing buildings.
• Coordinate sequencing with carpenters, roofers, plasterers, and other members of the construction team.
• Inspect work throughout the process, identify defects early, and make suitable corrections.
• Use hand tools, power tools, access equipment, and site machinery safely and responsibly.
• Keep work areas tidy, manage materials efficiently, and follow site waste and housekeeping procedures.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

While not essential, the following skills and qualifications would be highly beneficial for this role:

• Relevant NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) or City & Guilds certificates in bricklaying or related areas.
• Experience in working on conservation and restoration projects.
• Knowledge of traditional and modern building techniques, including bricklaying, pointing, and repointing.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and building codes.
• Understanding of health and safety procedures, including risk assessments and method statements.
• Experience with power tools, such as drills, saws, and sanders, and hand tools, like trowels, hammers, and chisels.
• Ability to work at heights, lift heavy loads, and maintain a safe working posture.
• Familiarity with site management software and ability to maintain accurate records.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients.
